Richa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far. I’ve lived in LA for seven years now, working as an actress and dancer. I also teach Indian Classical and Bollywood, dance classes. I grew up in Northern California in an Indian family of engineers/doctors by day and musicians/performers by night. My parents have a Bollywood music cover band which they have been performing with since their college days at UC Berkeley. Being surrounded by artists and culture from the day I was born, I developed a strong passion for the arts very early in life. When I was 5, I began training in Kathak (Indian Classical Dance) under my guru, Srimati Anuradha Nag (a disciple of the world renowned “Master of Kathak” Pandit Birju Maharaj). My love for dance and storytelling led me to do school plays and to fall in love with acting. I’ve wanted to be an actress and dancer since before I can even remember. I’ve never wanted to do anything else. I am extremely lucky to have a family that not only supports what I do, but they understand it.
“X: Past is Present,” a Bollywood film that focuses on the complexities and ways to decipher a man-woman relationship starring a San Francisco-based Indian American actress/model, Richa Shukla, premiered in the Bay Area Nov. 20 at the Cine Grand Theater in Fremont and Serra Theaters in Milpitas.
The film, which is helmed by 11 filmmakers, narrates 11 different genre subplots, all of which add to the main story that unfolds one night.
Shukla essays the character of Sanjana, whose favorite game in the film is playing hard-to-get.
Indian American dancer, actress and pageant queen Richa Shukla, who is rapidly racking up a list of film and TV credits, appeared as “Geeta” on the Thanksgiving-themed Nov. 20 episode of the FOX comedy “The Mindy Project.”
The show was created by, and stars, Mindy Kaling, one of the most prominent Indian Americans in American entertainment.
Geeta, a bombshell in a tight purple dress, is the “younger, hotter Indian girlfriend” of Dennis (Ed Helms), a man whom Mindy had rejected on a blind date — but seeing him with Geeta at a Thanksgiving get-together makes Mindy rethink her original impression of him.
